What geuda means

The term covers a range of sapphire-related rough appearances rather than one precise scientific variety. Traders may use descriptive local names based on colour, silk, cloudiness, transparency and internal features.

Why heat may change the appearance

Heating can modify rutile silk and colour-causing conditions within corundum. Under appropriate circumstances this may improve transparency or develop blue colour. The outcome depends on the starting material and process; it is never guaranteed.

Selection requires experience

Surface condition, fractures, inclusions, colour concentrations, crystal structure and likely reaction to heat must be considered. Heating can reduce value if the stone fractures, becomes too dark or fails to improve. Treatment should be performed responsibly and disclosed.

Sri Lankan trade varieties

Common Geuda varieties

These names describe appearances used in the Sri Lankan trade. They are not separate mineral species, and usage may vary between dealers and regions.

Diesel Geuda examples

Diesel Geuda

A descriptive Sri Lankan trade name commonly applied to pale yellow, honey-toned or slightly oily-looking translucent corundum. Yellow-brown colour concentrations and inclusions may be visible. Its response to heating cannot be judged from the name alone.

Dum / Dun Geuda examples

Dum / Dun Geuda

Usually describes pale corundum with a smoky, hazy or clouded appearance. The body colour may be light blue, yellow or pink. The degree and cause of the haze must be examined before any treatment decision.

Silky Geuda examples
03 · GEUDA VARIETY

Silky Geuda

Shows a soft silky sheen or reduced transparency, commonly associated with fine oriented rutile needles known as silk. Suitable high-temperature treatment may dissolve some silk and change clarity or colour, but the result varies from stone to stone.

Milky Geuda examples
04 · GEUDA VARIETY

Milky Geuda

Has a whitish or bluish milky cloudiness that scatters light and reduces transparency. Fine inclusions or internal micro-features may contribute to this appearance. Careful microscopic examination is needed before heating.

Young Geuda

A variable local trade expression sometimes used for pale, relatively clear or lightly developed-looking rough. It is not a standard gemological classification, so the seller should explain the intended meaning and the stone must be assessed on its own features.

06 · GEUDA VARIETY

Ottu

A Sri Lankan trade variety that may show distinct patches or zones of blue, pink, violet or pale colour within the same rough stone. Colour distribution and internal features can be uneven, and treatment outcomes remain uncertain.

Kowangu Pushparaga examples
07 · GEUDA VARIETY

Kowangu Pushparaga

A local trade term associated with yellow to golden corundum rough, sometimes showing uneven colour, cloudiness or inclusions. It should not be confused with a guaranteed final colour grade; identity, treatment potential and value require proper examination.

Important: A trade name or outward appearance alone cannot predict the result of heating. Selection, treatment and disclosure require experienced examination and controlled processes.

Frequently asked questions

Will every geuda stone become blue after heating?

Is geuda a separate mineral species?

No. It is a trade term associated mainly with certain corundum material.

Can the final result be guaranteed before heating?

No. Experienced selection improves decision-making, but heat-treatment outcomes remain uncertain.
